...morning! It didn't start off that way, though. After yet another prolonged battle over getting junior into some daytime attire (we're averaging two hours most days) I spat the dummy and told everyone to get in the car. Clothes or not. Another meltdown ensued (both kids now) but we pulled out of the driveway soon after, two red, snotty faces staring miserable into the backs of their parents heads.
We ended up in Clunes about half an hour down the road, with the intent of having a cuppa, something wrapped in pastry from the local bakery and a quick review of the local playground before heading home for a sleep (just for the kids, unfortunately). I cranked my head around as we passed the welcome sign to see one child catching flies in his wide open mouth and the other sucking the goodness out of her thumb. Both sound asleep.
So, on we went.
I do some of my best thinking when all is quiet from the back seat and I'm comfy in the front, staring vaguely out the window.
The Australian landscape is a bit of a muddle to me. I puzzle at the seeming disorder and randomness of it. Drawing a gumtree is far more difficult than an apple tree. They seem messy and awkward, yet still grand and elegant. That befuddles my eyes. But today I came over all glassy eyed at the wattle. Masses of the stuff all in glorious sunny yellow, thick through the bush all around us. I've become a bit florally light fingered of late and couldn't resist the urge to bring home as much as I could carry. Don't worry, I left plenty for the local bees. The stolen goods sit beside me as I type and keep wafting spring at me. Lovely.
It makes me want to make, and draw, and paint. Wattle is part of the landscape I can work with. Those little fluffy baubles are so much like tiny pompoms. I want to whip myself into a frenzy with some yellow wool and make a string of them. Then I want to draw some. Little yellow bubbles on a luminous, blue sky backdrop all held together on a platform of peachy pink, clay earth. I'll post some pics if I manage to snaffle some time to play.
And thank you husband for whisking the kids off for some quality Daddy/kiddy time over the weekend. I got a couple of decent chunks of time in my newly refurbished drawing room. I've been fiddling with several new coaster illustrations, including the one in the pic. I'll be adding colour and some collage bits to them. Things like glitter and little beads to start with. But, what else could I embellish with that suits the small scale I wonder? I might need to peruse the aisles at the local craft superstore.
I need some help with my drawing room, too. It has three walls of glass while the other is the door so there's not much hanging space for display. I recently got two new industrial strength shed shelves which are working nicely to hold all my goodies and maintain order. I've even retained the kiddie craft area in the corner (I'm such a cool Mum). But I need some ideas to make it a bit flasher. Are indoor plants a good idea? Maybe I could go crazy with some fancy curtains. Got any clever window ideas? Perhaps a cool rug on the floor. It's got me all enthused, it's like a new room and I want to be out there all the time. I think might even be able to slot my easel in there now so I can get busy with some big, messy drawings...of wattle!
